Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District is Hiring a Survey Technician Near Milwaukee, WI

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) is a regional governmental agency that serves 1.1 million people in the greater Milwaukee area. MMSD is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Survey Technician in the Technical Services Division. Reporting to the Survey Services Supervisor/Senior Project Manager (SPM), you assist the Project Surveyors in providing, verifying, monitoring, recording, and compiling engineering field data. You also assist in the location/protection of MMSD facilities and the record-drawing data acquisition thereof and participate in boundary survey activities, with all services being conducted in accordance with MMSD policies and procedures.
 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Field locate MMSD facilities as specified in Diggers Hotline ticket marking instructions and referenced in record data.
  • Collaborate with the Surveying Services Supervisor/SPM and/or Project Surveyor in conducting survey field activities.
  • Perform survey measurements and other field activities under the direction of the Project Surveyor.
  • Assist Project Surveyor in completing boundary survey of proposed and existing MMSD properties and easements.
  • Process field data as necessary and provide data printouts and field plots to necessary parties.
  • hicles on a daily basis and apprise the supervisor of inventory shortages or needs.
  • Examine, monitor, and maintain a state of cleanliness and order in survey vehicles.
  • Ensure completion of all required paperwork, records, documents, etc.
  • Maintain technical competency and remain current in technology and changes in the industry.
  • Follow and comply with all safety and work rules and alert the supervisor of any irregularities. 
  • Complete special projects as assigned.
 Qualifications:
  • Associate degree in land surveying, civil engineering technical program, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Ability to apply effective written and oral communications skills to the completion of job assignments. 
  • Basic proficiency in CAD.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply survey skills to complete job assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective public and working relations.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work with descriptions, record drawings, specifications, and plans.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of OSHA confined entry procedures to the safe completion of job duties.
  • Ability to proficiently operate survey equipment such as GPS units, total stations, digital and automatic levels, tripods/tribrachs, data collectors, metal detectors, as well as a variety of small hand and power tools, radios, and other field equipment.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel
  • Confined space entry and CPR certification (provided by MMSD).
  • Valid driver's license and a good driving record at time of application and throughout employment.

Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk or electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate or loud, and occasionally very loud.
Required to stand and walk for long periods of time. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. Ability to travel to constructions sites as assigned. Lift and/or move up to 30 lbs. regularly and lift and/or move up to 45 lbs. frequently. Must be able to walk across uneven terrain and have the ability to access a confined space through a 20-inch diameter opening. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
